Celebrating National Book Month

Dave shares his top five favorite ways to celebrate National Book Month, including events, reading challenges, and his own Goodreads giveaway!

October is National Book Month, and what better way to honor it than by sharing some of my favorite ways to celebrate reading, writing, and everything books bring into our lives? Whether you’re a reader, writer, or simply someone who loves the smell of a good paperback, here are my top five ways to make the most of this special month.

Use That Library Card

Libraries certainly aren’t dying — but they still need our support! I can’t tell you how much gratitude and joy I felt being a part of the Berwyn Public Library’s event this past summer. Huge thanks to Quinn Stitt and the Berwyn Library for the opportunity.

There’s something timeless about connecting with readers and fellow authors in a local library setting. Nothing beats sharing the stage, hearing the energy in the room, and celebrating stories together.

Attend a Local Book Signing

Not sure where to find local authors and their events? Start with your library or favorite independent bookstore — many have a local author section or a community calendar full of readings and signings.

Once you discover an author you enjoy, check their website or Facebook page to see if they have a signing scheduled. (And yes, your local newspaper’s events section can still come in handy!)

Meeting fans and new readers is always something I look forward to. I’ve been lucky to host a few signings over the last few months, and those moments always remind me why I love writing in the first place.

Get Through Your TBR List

We’re all guilty of it, that ever-growing “to be read” pile on the nightstand. This month, challenge yourself to finally pick up one (or two) of those books and dive in.

When you finish, take a moment to leave a short review online. Even a single sentence can help boost an author’s visibility and reach more readers. As an author myself, I’m always deeply grateful when someone takes the time to write a review,  especially if you liked the novel (lol).

Enter a Giveaway

One of my favorite ways to celebrate National Book Month? Free books! Goodreads is my go-to spot to discover and enter giveaways for new reads. I’m also hosting one myself — you can win 1 of 100 free Kindle copies of Out of Cabrini! Cozy up with your own digital copy and step into the true-to-life world of Chicago’s Cabrini-Green projects.

Listen to an Author Interview

If the weather’s keeping you indoors or you can’t make it to a live signing, you can still connect with authors through podcasts. I personally love hearing what inspires my favorite writers — and I’ve had the chance to sit on the other side of the mic, too!

Recently, I joined my friend Russell on the @PONetwork Podcast, where we talked about what makes a compelling character, what advice I have for aspiring writers, and more.

#NationalBookMonth

Celebrate National Book Month your own way.  Whether it’s revisiting an old favorite, joining a book club, or just finding a quiet corner to read. And as always, stay safe and keep reading.
